Confusion is now a political tactic.
They're Liberals and establishment Democrats, both of which are well too the Right of the generally accepted political center. Things are only so skewed in the United States because of decades of corporate sponsored disinformation.
The policy positions of Bernie Sanders are considered standard issue in most of Europe; that's because he's a center left candidate. Only in America is he considered a "radical Socialist" and that's because the corporate sponsored Right hates him and smears him every chance they get.
If you run down the list of Bernie's positions on things like living wages, free college, universal healthcare and the like, you'll find that every one of them is supported by an outright majority of Americans. In other words, he's in touch with what Americans actually want; it's the two corporate parties who are radicals!
