His amounts are "approximate". If your plant is still moist it won't take as much - but then it probably isn't ready to water yet. If you are soaking them, it really doesn't matter if you use more.
I would say I let mine get to the "2-3" on his 10 scale. Leaves drooping is the sign you need to have already been thinking about watering, and it is getting late
But thoroughly soaked soil that drains well you can't "over-soak". So you want to make sure there's good run off all the way around.
With a cloth pot you can actually feel a temperature difference between the pot and the room. You can even feel the difference between the top and bottom of the pot where the lower soil is still moist. When you water you can feel around the pot for dry spots. When it's moist it's cool.
