LED are way more efficient but...that 1000 watt HPS. It works pretty darned great !...like crazy great. I mean if your tight for dough an HID gets it done really well. And if it is for personal you dont need to get 1.45 grams per watt you just want meds ! A 400 can get you close to a pound...315 CMH i got 15.5 oz when i just started out.

But i could get it done for less watts. But HPS means not caring about pruing so much because it goes in deep.

I will have trouble taking it out of the room actually. But spring means less heat in the bloom room. Back to boards over area !
I run 2x 1kw SE hps and don't care what my yield is, I just wanted good quality personal smoke =). The penetration and bud thickness is much better than any other room. Only downside is I'll have to start running a portable AC shortly to dehumidify and chill the temps.

Bunny cleavage!!! I'm spitting but you can't see it. Best thing ever.
Here is the Widow
She is much taller than mine. Less bushy though. My girl right now os staying a deep green aside from the earlier lower issues with leaf growth. I did some super training with her yesterday so we will see. I'm trying to keep them short. Within reason anyway.
have a 400 w HPS ballast that my older brother bought in '95. Still kick'n, it is lit (AF) right now.
And that is the one with almost 5×5 coverage?

The HID lights really go deep into the plant to produce density.
Newer lights you clean them up more under a certain point because the light intensity is greatly diminisned there and if there is nothing there it throws the energy up where the buds are.

HID (HPS) the ones on the botton right off the pot are hard nugs. The tops are 3 feet above that.

I love the new stuff though i just mean if your tight for cash. the new gear is fantastic for buds.

So last night I individually pulled each plant again and looked them over. Took a couple more leaves off of one or two of them. Then I did some different training techniques depending on the natural growth of the plants. @Gweedo recommended one style where you pinch the branches until they crunch. I did that on one. Then a lot of tying and twisting until the canopy was flat again. I'm trying to keep them even and level. I think next go around I'm using trellis netting.

I'm definitely tight for cash. I'm looking for the best lights I can get in my price range. Regardless of type. I've found a few sets I'm doing some research on.

I'll second (or third) the suggestion for the HLG QB's. I used to run a 250w HPS/MH magnetic ballast circa the mid 90's. It did a fine job for a personal meds grow, but I don't miss all the ducting that was in my tent one bit. Now I'm running a dual CREE COB setup and IMO the light coverage is superior to the 250w HID I was running. Now, a 1000w HPS is going to be king for coverage, but in your area, you could get just as good coverage running 4x HLG 132 QB's.

I'll be frank too, cheaper blurples suck. They're perfectly fine for a veg tent, but a friend of mine who was growing under a Mars Hydro 300w blurple could produce nothing but wispy, airy buds. My 250w HID outperformed it by a mile every time.

I've only had my COB's for a little over a month and the nugs are pretty darned solid so far, and I've got at least another 4 weeks of flower left. I'm pretty satisified with them.

Do your research. There is great LED lighting out there, and there is complete shite. QB's will come highly recommended by pretty much everyone. I'd also say the CREE COB's are worthing looking at too. Those Timber branded passives are pretty sweet. Lots of options, just make sure you get something worth your while.

So these are from last night. I've been doing some training and when i was lifting pots to see if they needed water I realized a few branches were stronger than they seemed as they slipped their leads. I had to strap them back down. I keep training to keep as flat and short as possible. I hear the white widow stretches pretty hard during flower. Not sure what the granny skunk is going to do. Rather safe than sorry. My tent is 5 foot tall but i still have to accommodate for the lights. The tallest 1 is 6 inches so far. Probably be higher if i wasn't constantly forcing them to stay down. I did utilize the binder clips and man they are amazing. I plan on popping these in to flower once i cut my girl down. So they've got a few more weeks of veg.

Tonight will be watering time when i get home. I'm on the fence about feeding. They look nice and green so i don't want to over-do it. I also don't want them to have to bounce back from being overfed. The things you start to focus on with this plant I swear.

Thanks for the picture. Visuals always help. Believe it or not, I've trimmed the bottoms twice. It seems as if all of their growth is lateral. @SCJedi warned me they get very leafy.
Dang those are some straight bushes then! I grew a seedsman white widow once. I think i topped it once. Grew like friggin wildfire too. Wasn’t a big fan of the smoke, but I’m picky as all hell about the effects.

That Widow was a freebie with my order and on the advice of someone wiser than myself i ran it first so i didn't muck up my expensive seeds. It is growing fast when it is good but it is super finicky and sensitive. Did you have any issues out of it when you grew it?

They really are little bushes. I cut growth off and it is back the next day thicker than ever. This is going to be a pain come flower time.

This is really best for stretchy plants with a lot of internodal-space - which you need to train violently or they would hit lights - stuff like that.

Especially with short plants like yours you have plenty of room to gently bend them while they are still new and flexible, without doing damage to the plant. If I was you I would save that super-cropping for later grows or emergency "damn that's tall!" plants.

Punch holes around the edge of the pot wherever you need.
make a hook out of something that won't damage the plant, (like rubber coated wire) and grab a limb with it.
Use a length of that garden-twist-tie to go from the pot edge to the hook.
Use your fingers (not the twist-tie) to bend the limb where you want it
take the slack out of the twist tie and secure it.

If you spread the plants out after topping, you will make room for the number of tops you are growing. This will also give a lot of light to the secondary shoots (most of them) to give you more options for tops to keep, or make some nice tasty clones.

No issues at all, I remember it being one of the most vigorous, no-fuss plants I ever grew. I tend to think that when plants are young, less than a month old, they can be sensitive to all sorts of things. But once they get past that and especially into flowering they really take off.

I'm of the school of thought that while I'm vegging, what I'm really doing is growing roots. In soil I want my roots to stretch horizontally into all the available soil more than I want the branches up top to stretch horizontally. The key to that is good soil, not over-watering (make the roots search for water), and letting the roots fill-in before up-potting. A robust and healthy root system is the foundation for delivering nutrients to all the stuff up top.

Believe it or not, they've all been topped. They are growing wide at such a rapid rate. I'm tying them down too. Garden twine and binder clips. I'll get some pictures when i get home. A couple don't really want to bend but they will survive. It was your advice from my first grow that got me doing it much earlier this time. I was thinking of topping again but I'm kind of worried it would be too much for the space. However, I have no idea how many are males and how many are females yet. I could have all males or even all girls.

Bullshit.
You have air, water , light, and temperature,,,
Me too !
I harvested my first crop 8 months ago.
It can be intimidating to look at photos of all of these beautiful gardens, but remember, they are planting the same seeds you are, and breathing the same air.
Keep reading and question everything.
Good things come to you.
Killing jewels, keeping it 💯. I love that.
All we want is you to get the best results as soon as possible. No pressure at all I know you got this.
If we can help spare you from wasting your time and money on a half-assed return we will step right up to tell you that. No coddling around here. Youre doing a great job so far. Your training will pay off that white widow is going to be fire. Those blurples will still give you a nice yield if you don't upgrade before then so don't feel rushed. I understand the budget factor heavy. One income household too. I seem to end up feeding and smoking everyone up too. Lmao. Expensive. I just have to be patient and realize my garden will get there eventually. Good things come to those who go out and fuckin get it. And from what I've seen that's you.
So like jewels said good things are definitely coming to you.

it's funny I do this too. Imo it's basically supercropping without the bend. I massage my stems as well during flower to produce that swell. Again I love making the plant think it's going to die so it goes into overdrive. Same thing when I defoliate. That's why I do it all at once. I completely agree with some here some there, it makes for a healthier plant. I'm just tryna get the strongest expression I suppose without the illgotten effects. So far I've been lucky. Maybe once I've been doing this for ten years I'll preach it as gospel but until then I'm just having fun learning.
The netting will be a lot of fun. Weaving the branches around through it until youre left with a Sea Of Green. Nothing but colas. The results will be gorgeous and rewarding. Training is probably my favorite part of this almost as much as smoking it so I do both at the same time 🤪. It's just so damn relaxing getting lost in the plants. im pretty sure it was jewels again who said some of us do this for our own sanity. That's me all day. When I'm going through it I just go plop down in front of the tent and just get lost. Nothing matters in those moments but the babies.
